I Knew You'd Be is nearly eight years old, I think, and probably the first real song I ever wrote. I had this image of someone stroking the hair of a loved one to comfort them, and that image haunted me until I wrote this song.
lyrics
I KNEW YOU'D BE
In my heart I plan my course
I’m master of my fate
Then things go bad and I get mad
And myself I start to hate
In the darkness of my night
I curse at God and man
I rant and I rave and I try to be brave
But I don’t believe I can
‘cause I know I’m made of tin
It’s then the dawn will come
To chase my sorrow and worry
And you’ll be there to stroke my hair
And I’ll tell you that I’m sorry
And you’ll look at me
And you’ll say with a grin,
“I knew you’d be.”
