This song started out as a straight-up blues response to the eleventh chapter of Hebrews: twelve-bar progression, open G tuning, slide, the whole works. It never felt quite right, though, so I experimented until I hit upon this particular iteration.
lyrics
STRANGER IN THIS COUNTRY
I’m a stranger in this country, Lord
Don’t know where I’m goin’
I’m a stranger in this country, Lord
Don’t know where I’m goin’
Gotta find that livin’ water
Let it take me where it’s flowin’
My faith’s a little shaky, Lord
There’s a struggle inside me
My faith’s a little shaky, Lord
There’s a struggle inside me
I’m not sure what I hope for
Uncertain of what I don’t see
Enoch was a righteous man
So God took him away
Enoch was a righteous man
So God took him away
I know I ain’t that holy
Guess I gotta stay
My home is in heaven, Lord
In that city in the sky
My home is in heaven, Lord
In that city in the sky
But I’m a stranger in this country
‘Til the day I die
