A true story...my biological mother had me in the summer between her junior and senior years of high school; my biological father was serving in Vietnam. When I met her, she told me that if she had kept me, my name would have been Timothy Wayne (I don’t remember where Timothy came from, but Wayne was her father’s name). It’s a bit of a mind-bender to think I could be the same physical being I am now, yet have had a completely different life, a different identity; this song is an attempt to express that.
lyrics
TIMOTHY WAYNE
I met my mom when I was twenty-five
She had to give me away when I was barely alive
No fault of her own, she was just too young
But she told me something, now this song is sung
She said, “When you were born, I wanted you so bad
But I was seventeen, Vietnam had your dad
So I let you go, you took another name
But in my mind you're always Timothy Wayne”
Timothy Wayne
Who would you be
If you were me?
Timothy Wayne
What would you perceive
If through these eyes you'd see?
Timothy Wayne
Would you be free
If I could restore your life to thee?
Timothy Wayne
You'd be me
She told me all about her family's shame
And the guilt that she felt from taking all the blame
So she moved to the city and made her own luck
Dad came home from the war, spent his days driving truck
They went their own separate ways, the past was the past
And in a bulrush basket to the world was I cast
“So you see,” she said with a voice full of pain,
“It was all for the best, my darling Timothy Wayne.”
CHORUS
The years have come and gone with the good and the bad
But I wonder about the life I never had
A doctor, a farmer, just what would I be?
I might look much the same, but would I still be me?
I've made my way, but I'm playing a role
The man that I am has someone else's soul
So when I look in the mirror, the thought that visits my brain
Is that I'm looking at the ghost of Timothy Wayne
